Named after the Dukes and Earls of Bedford, Russell Square (in the borough of Camden) was first laid out in 1804, but has been recently re-landscaped (in 2002) to the look and layout we know and love today.
It’s a very famous landmark in history and literature; Russell Square is namechecked in a myriad of famous books, not least The Day of the Triffids and Vanity Fair; eagle-eyed visitors can look out for a blue plaque at the north-west corner commemorating the fact that T. S. Eliot worked there from the late 1920s when he was poetry editor of Faber & Faber. That building is now used by the School of Oriental and African Studies.
With its own Tube station, it’s easy to reach on the Piccadilly line, lying between Holborn and King's Cross St Pancras stations.
Today it’s popular for those simply wishing to take in the sights and sounds, rest and contemplate in the square itself, or as a starting point for visiting the nearby British Museum or Charles Dickens Museum.
